Easy Seasoning

Ingredients

  • salt
  • pepper

Method

Mix salt and pepper to taste in a single shaker and use to quickly season food in the kitchen or at the table.

If you're trying to cut down on salt, gradually reduce the salt content until you're just seasoning your food with pepper.


Try herbs instead of salt for flavour.

Herb Salt Substitute

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1 teaspoon mace
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar

Method

Grind the ingredients together using a mortar and pestle. Store in an airtight container and use in a similar manner to salt.

Gomasio - Salt Substitute

Ingredients

  • 1 part sesame seeds
  • 1 part salt

Method

Toast and crush the sesame seeds.
Mix together with the salt and store in an airtight container. Use as you would salt.

If you're trying to cut down on salt, reduce the salt content over time until you achieve 5 parts sesame seeds to 1 part salt.

 

Salt-Alternative Seasoning (Salt-Free)

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons basil
  • 2 tablespoons celery seeds
  • 2 tablespoons sage
  • 2 tablespoons savory
  • 1 tablespoon marjoram
  • 1 tablespoon thyme
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • ground kelp

Method

Using a mortar and pestle, grind herbs together. Add kelp at end to taste. Store in an airtight container.

Alter herbs to taste or according to the dish.

 

Handy Household Uses For Salt

Cooking With Salt

Beating egg whites: add a touch of salt to get a fluffier result.

Boiled eggs: add a teaspoon of salt to the water for easier shelling.

Baking bread: for a crisp crust, brush dough with solution of 1 part salt to 2 parts water.

Oversalted stew or soup: add half a teaspoon of brown sugar to counteract the salty taste.


A pinch of salt can lengthen the life of cut flowers.

Cleaning With Salt

Cleaning coffee cups: salt can help remove stains.

Substitute salt for dishwashing liquid if you run out: sprinkle salt into the water, wash dishes as usual and rinse well.

Removing stains from enamel: Mix salt with turpentine to make a paste, apply to surface for quarter of an hour, then wipe off.

Cleaning copper-based pots: rub with salt and either:

  • vinegar or
  • lemon juice or
  • 1/2 tomato

Cleaning greasy collars and cuffs: gently rub with a small amount of ammonia and salt.

Removing blood stains from fabric: soak in lukewarm, lightly salted water.

Other Household Uses

Setting dyes: When washing clothes for the first time, add salt to the wash to prevent colors fading.

Cut flowers: a little salt can increase the life span of flowers in a vase.

Ant repellent: sprinkle salt around places in your house where ants like to hang out.
